The sites below are best viewed on a laptop/desktop for purposes of route planning

RideWithGPS

Bike route planner and cycling navigation app (my favorite site on the Internet).

Seeking Dirt

A web-based mapping application that helps adventure cyclists find and plan routes over dirt or gravel roads and trails.  Leverages various state GIS data sources - very cool stuff.

Google Maps

'nuff said

Bing Maps

Their Streetside view offers impressive coverage - in some cases more than Google Street View.  Sharp images offer a good preview of the roads ahead.

Vermont Roads

Cool site that leverages mapping data from Vermont Dept. of Transportation - Helps in finding new Class 4 roads to ride.

New Hampshire Dept. of Transportation Road & Projects

The DOT has a map of all the class 6 roads available on their website. Class 6 roads are in purple. Private roads are in orange.

New Hampshire GranitView

The GRANITView web mapping application provides access to key NH GRANIT data layers, along with a suite of tools to navigate and interact with those data layers.

I found this info on a message board that provides a step by step process on how to view a map of dirt roads in NH, at least the ones the DOT thinks are dirt:

  • Click on the "view layers" button in the menu bar at the top.
In the menu that appears on the left, check "Transportation Networks", then click the plus sign next to it.
  • Uncheck everything except local roads.
  • Click the arrow to the right of local roads.
  • Click "Turn on / off layer visualizations"
  • Under "Select a visualization for your layer" choose "custom layer type"
  • Under "Choose Symbology Type", select "attribute"
  • Under "Pick an attribute to symbolize", select SURF_TYPE.
  • Click on "Unpaved" and increase the line width to 5-6 px to make it easier to see.
  • Click Apply, Done.
  • Collapse the menu to maximize viewing area.
  • Zoom in until you see the thicker lines for the unpaved roads appear.
Some of the dirt roads may be class 6 roads.
